infra:dante

Dante network

Abstract

Similar to ndi, Hackeriet has a lot of audio based use cases and art installations.

The only way we have to do audio routing and streaming today, is:

  • RCA cables
  • A Chromecast (with associated caveats)

Wiring all of these up is a painstaking effort:

  • Long distances of cabling
  • Low port capacity on both inputs and outputs on mixers and devices
  • Audio input on certain devices requires extra hardware
  • Rerouting signals and otherwise extracting the data in various settings like LedFX, oscilloscope, livestreaming etc. requires adding yet another analog audio device

Having a good solution for running Dante both across permanent audio installations, towards other areas of Hausmania, and for explicit use in art installations would make us more flexible down the line.

Current situation

  • We do not have any Dante devices.
  • A member has gratiously borrowed us a stereo pair Dante receiver, explicitly for use in the audio rack wired to channel 3 and 4.
    • This receiver must not be removed.
    • Anyone can route audio towards this receiver, as an alternative to the Chromecast in the audio rack

Research

  • As mentioned on the Wishlist page, a lot of modern audio equipment supports Dante. It would be wise to consider upgrading to a modern mixer.
  • Running Dante receivers/transmitters on RPis would align perfectly with usecases like art installations
    • An open source Dante implementation called inferno exists
      • It does look very promising, with full pipewire integration, CLI pipe usage (e.g. ffmpeg) and more
      • We haven't gotten it to pair with the Dante AVIO dongles
