Annual Report for Hackeriet 2024

Hackeriet is a hackerspace in Oslo, founded in 2009, with the purpose of providing a physical place for playing with technology, creativity, and collaboration. We are a non-profit, non-partisan, and technologically neutral association, where decisions are made in line with an egalitarian philosophy. Below is the board’s annual report for 2024.

• In 2024 the association continued its core activities by maintaining an open and inclusive environment for learning, creativity, and exploration of new technology.
• We held open days (“hackurdays”) every Tuesday and Saturday, where anyone could drop by to work on their own projects, share knowledge, and socialise.
• Hackeriet has remained non-partisan and has actively promoted a culture of openness and knowledge-sharing, in accordance with the bylaws (§ 3).

• The board did not see the need for many formal meetings during 2024, but maintained ongoing informal communication about operations.
• Decisions in Hackeriet have been made according to the principles of a “do-ocracy”: those who contribute have influence. We believe this ensures engagement and alignment with Hackeriet’s purpose.

• According to the board’s follow-up, the financial situation is sound.
• The membership base is around 35 paying members.
• The membership fee was set at three levels (Sponsorship 500 NOK / Normal 250 NOK / Student 150 NOK), in line with the resolution of the general assembly.

• Hackeriet has hosted a number of weekly gatherings where members have worked on everything from electronics, radio waves (LA1HAX), IoT security, and software development.
• During 2024 we contributed to several events, including:
  • BSides Oslo 2024: Hardware-hacking stand and after-party with live DJ. (Audience 50+)
  • Summer Party 29 June: Backyard party with grilling and DJ. (Audience 50+)
  • Barbecue Event 17 June: Focused on locally sourced sausages. (Audience 20+)
  • Black Valley Party 2024: Participation with social contributions, technology demonstrations, and networking.
  • Chaos Communication Congress (CCC) 26–30 December 2024: Representatives from Hackeriet attended in Hamburg, Germany, and gained new inspiration in digital freedom, privacy, and creative technology exploration.
• We have also carried out various practical projects:
  • Mate-Lights Project: Interactive light installation made from recycled empty bottles.
  • Receipt-Printer Project: In-house software to repurpose a receipt printer for new uses.
  • Server Room and Network Upgrades: Modernisation of the server room, management of internet lines, and Wi-Fi at Hausmania.
  • Beverage-vending-machine integration with a payment solution.

• Maintenance of network infrastructure at Hausmania, including wired/wireless network.
• Tidying and upgrading of premises, installation of workbenches, and necessary cleaning.
• Assistance at events and festivals in the building, such as sound/light, internet access, and technical support.

• Hackeriet will continue to focus on open technology, collaboration, and an inclusive community.
• In the coming period the board will also strive to keep expenses under control and ensure we have good financial sustainability.
• We aim to increase the membership further, including through workshops and recruitment linked to new projects and events.
• We have identified that handling and administration of memberships needs improvement.

• The year 2024 has been characterised by stable operations and a number of creative projects, underscoring the importance of Hackeriet as a non-profit community.
• There has been some drama regarding the lease with Hausmania and the potential for bankruptcy on their side. Hackeriet must take its role as an active participant in the building seriously but also consider alternatives to survive in other premises. In general we receive signals from Hausmania that Hackeriet’s presence is appreciated and considered valuable. Efforts have been made to improve the understanding of Hackeriet among the building’s members.
